TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Called as a motor sports haven along the historic Chisholm
Trail in Fort Worth, Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) is a second largest and third
largest in the world sports
facility in US having the seating capacity of 150,061-seats featuring 194
skybox VIP suites. It represents the pinnacle in luxury for fans of auto racing.
HISTORY OF TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
The top promoter,
marketer and sponsor of motor sports activities in the United States Speedway
Motor sports Inc (SMI) is the owner and operator Texas Motor Speedway along
with Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway, Las
Vegas Motor Speedway and Infineon Raceway at Sonoma. SMI uses its 600 Racing
subsidiary to manufacture and sell smaller-scale, modified racing vehicles and
parts, for operating and sanctioning the entry-level racing series such as the
Legends Car, Bandolero Car and the Thunder Roadster racing circuits. SMI also
owns Performance Racing Network which airs motor sports events and programming
to more than 750 stations nationwide. After sales services is provided through
its SMI Properties subsidiary.
Built in 1994, the
Speedway features seating arrangements for over 150,000 visitors. The NASCAR
Winston Cup Series at Bruton Smith's Texas Motor Speedway was quite similar to
its sister track, Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway) as
both of the tracks having a double dog-leg frontstretch, two short chutes
connecting both sides of the start/finish line straightaway and banking with 24-degree
in turns.
Soon,
the difference between the two tracks emerged. The turns were longer compared
to Lowe's track and allowed the cars to bring more speed through the corners.
The chassis setups and gearing used at Lowe’s course were no longer useful at
Texas and the tires were subjected to more wear. The inaugural event was ruin
by rain for three days. Qualifying was abandoned as the Texas Motor Speedway
was new to the program so the teams had more time to practice on the tricky
track. Dale Jarrett was assigned the pole position in the inaugural race.
13 out of the 43 car
starting field were crashed, on the first lap, as they entered Turn 1.
Surprisingly only one driver Darrell Waltri was suffered severely and retired.
He was only driver presented at the Winston Cup to win a race at Texas World
Speedway in 1979. The first series winner of the first NASCAR Winston Cup
Series held at Texas Motor Speedway was Jeff Burton. Roush Racing teammate,
Mark Martin won in 1998, and in 1999 "Texas Terry" Labonte of Lone
Star state obtained the victory under the caution flag.
The Speedway boasts
of unbelievable trivia like eight Texas Stadiums (Dallas Cowboys stadium) in
its infield. The permanent lighting system of the speedway is sufficient enough
to illuminate 11 NFL football stadiums. With the capacity to accommodate nearly
155,000 audiences in the grandstands, the roar of the engines over the
screaming of the fans as they cheer their favorite NASCAR drivers around the
1.5-mile track is barely audible.
