POCONO RACEWAY

Featuring 2.5-mile tri-oval with three turns, each with a different degree of banking and three straights with a different length, Pocono is a unique raceway in itself. This combination produces bumper fender-to-fender action in the turns, 200 mph slingshots on the long straights and photo-finish endings.

HISTORY OF POCONO RACEWAY

Built in 1968, the first race on the three-quarter mile track held in Pocono Raceway. The raceway was extended to two and one-half mile track, where the first 500 mile Indy race in 1971 held. After 4 years, in 1974, the Pocono Raceway hosted first NASCAR 500 mile race. Because of the CART-USAC fight and many construction mistakes, the Pocono Raceway suffered severe financial crisis. On the verge of selling the track, Bill France Sr. contacted the owners and asked to meet him in New York. He tried to convince them not to sell the track.

In 1990, very quietly and very slowly, work had started to build Pocono Raceway all over again. Over a ten-year period approximately $ 3 million had been spent every year. New crash walls, completely new paving, removed all the old garages and ¾ mile track, completely re-graded and cut and filled the old Garage Area. The new Garage Area was built completely different. A 150-site motor home park for the participants was also built, 124 of which have water, sewer and electricity, the only Winston Cup track to have all this except for Talladega. The raceway also boasts of the biggest and most fan friendly Paddock Area so that fans are only 56 feet away from the cars with the most beautiful Press Rooms on the circuit. The reconstruction also included the removal of the old 375 toilets and with Long John, the biggest toilet facility in the world, with 1000 stalls; so that we would be assured we would have no lines. The Raceway also claims to have the largest  and most beautiful Midway with fourteen 40’ Blue Spruce, 200 picnic tables and gazebos all over. With all these facilities, the Pocono raceway has become the most famous racetrack in the world. Pocono Raceway is located in the Magic Triangle - New York, Philadelphia and Pocono Raceway. All are 90 miles away from each other with New York as the leading television market and Philadelphia as the number 4 television market. Pocono is within 200 miles of 60 million people. The unusual triangular configuration is beneficial to many lead changes especially with the longest straightaway and the widest main straight with the longest and widest Pit Road. All of these features make Pocono a distinct Raceway.

Auto racing launched by racing automobiles around horse racing tracks at fairgrounds in the early 1900's along with all the atmosphere of the state fairs, all kinds of food, picnics, clowns, jugglers, acrobats, bands with lots of different music.

A uniqueness in the NASCAR circuit as Pocono Raceway merges with its 200 mph straight-aways and road track with its three different flat turns makes it only non-road track, where drivers have to shift once per lap, which may require an additional furnace for the gearbox oil. Adjustments are not very easy at Pocono to top speed and handling in the three corners with all different in length and banking. Too much irregularity in the suspension adjustment decreases top speed in the straights. Many demands have been fulfilled on the brakes as well as on the shocks, because of several dips in the track.
