NORTH CAROLINA SPEEDWAY

With an idea to make fan-friendly atmosphere with Southern hospitality in the heart of stock car country, several local businessmen in southeastern North Carolina built North Carolina Speedway in the early 1960s. This Speedway held its first race in 1965. Four years later, the original flat one-mile track was turned into a banked 1.017-mile oval and become the popular host to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division schedules.

HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA SPEEDWAY

The 1.017 miles, North Carolina Speedway opened its track back in October 31, 1965 and was resurfaced in 1969. The speedway officials changed its name to North Carolina Speedway and a new logo was unveiled in February of 1998. Many more improvements took place in 1998. With the seating capacity of 28,021, a high-rise grandstand was built, in summer between Turns 2 & 3, including state-of-the-art souvenir stands, concession stands, restrooms and first aid stations. Guest Services, additional paved handicapped parking, a new line of North Carolina Speedway apparel and merchandise and an additional 54 acres of free car parking was added to improve the expansion.

North Carolina Speedway was relocated and expanded its Vendor Row in the winter of 1998. The souvenir trailers and corporate displays are now placed outside the admission gates between Turns 1 & 2. The enlarged paved Chalet Village provides electrical and cable hook-ups at each marquee. Among one of the few tracks that had pits on both sides, North Carolina Speedway started the construction on a new pit road, in April of 1999. Currently, there are 45 pit stalls on the front stretch, which has been extended to Turn 1. The pit stalls used on the backstretch between Turns 2 & 3 will not be used in future. The Speedway renovated the Corporate Suites with new carpeting, furniture and windows in summer. In July of 1999, North Carolina Speedway became a member of the growing ISC group of racetracks by Penske Motorsports, Inc., purchased by International Speedway Corporation. Today, the Speedway is host to the two annual NASCAR weekends, comprising events for Winston Cup and Busch Series and Grand National Division.

Bobby Allison and Richard Petty are among the many famous drivers, who have set records at this Southern track. Every year, the speedway is host to two annual NASCAR weekends, events from the Winston Cup Series and Busch Series Grand National Division.

The first Winston Cup race, “The Rock” was organized at North Carolina Speedway on October 31, 1965. The laps were reduced from 500 to 492 to keep the distance at 500 miles and the track was reshaped and redesigned at 1.017 miles instead of an even mile in 1969. With the 1995 AC Delco 400 race, the length was reduced to 400 from 500 beginning. Presently, Junior Johnson is the record winner at “The Rock” with 14.
