HISTORY OF LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Being the first new super speedway to be built in the Southwest region of the United States in more than 20 years, Las Vegas Motor Speedway has all the reasons to boast. Built in 1995, LVMS required teams to remove the four million cubic yards of dirt, equivalent to 35,000 yards per day. Featuring 2,600 lighting fixtures on 200 light poles was custom-designed. Further, 8,000 mirrors, 175 miles of wire, 600 tons of steel and 1,975 tons of concrete was added. To make the racing surface, 42,000 tons of asphalt, equal to 17 miles of residential roadways was used.

In 1996, Las Vegas Motor Speedway was first host to the NASCAR ‘Las Vegas 500 Indy Racing League’ event, the conclusion part of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Jack Sprague was the winner of that event. Since then, Las Vegas Motor Speedway has flourished distinctively. With a record of more than 250,000 fans attended the Pennzoil World of Outlaws, Orleans 150 NASCAR Winston West, Sam's Town 300 and Las Vegas 400 NASCAR Winston West race events, on March5-7, 1999. This was strongest group of headliners ever assembled under one roof. NASCAR stars Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Ward Burton and Dale Earnhardt are the prominent figures participating every year in the Speedway.

In September 1996, the first races, the IRL race with SCCA races as support were held. In this SCCA races, the modified oval with a chicane at one end of the pit straight was used. In 2002, the seventh year of Nevada’s largest sports facility had witnessed its most successful season of the year, drawing a record crowd along with television viewers. Started with NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series, more than 400 racing events and 1,100 other events were held at LVMS. The event was concluded with Speedway Children's Charities distributing more than $228,000 to children-related organizations in the Las Vegas community.

The UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 listed as the third-highest rated NASCAR Winston Cup race on the 36-race schedule and Sam's Town 300, as the highest-rated NASCAR Busch Series race on the F/X Network and the second-highest rated NASCAR Busch Series race on cable in 200. Both races were aired on the television, where millions viewers enjoyed the events. The audiences were stunned, when Busch won four races and finishing third in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series points standings. Earlier he had competed in Legends Cars and Grand American Modifieds at LVMS in 1999. The Orleans Racing Team and Gaughan jointly won two races. Both races were held at the Texas Motor Speedway, a sister track to LVMS.

John Force, Larry Dixon, Angelle Savoie and Jeg Coughlin Jr., the four national champions of NHRA emerged as the winners of AC Delco Las Vegas Nationals at LVMS. Dixon was also the winner of NHRA Summitracing.com Nationals held in April. The speedway was also the major attraction for national television ads for several major corporations, where pop singer Brittany Spears used the site for her movie. Like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, many other television shows and episodes were recoded at LVMS.

To make easier access in and out of the Speedway, new parking and traffic plans have been made, and to enhance the traffic flow in and out of the speedway during major national events, new circle of the I-215 beltway have been made. Fifty teams from the NASCAR Winston Cup and NASCAR Busch Series have used Speedway in past few years to practice for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler400, Sam's Town 300 and the upcoming season. Four-time winner of the NASCAR Winston Cup, Jeff Gordon and Stewart are also expected to participate in the test session among other participants. During the testing, the speedway's grandstands are open for the public for free of charge.
