capacity of any sports facility between New York and the Carolinas. Every year
seating capacity is growing continuously with about 20,000 new seats added to
the current capacity of 140,000 seats (2001). The one-mile Dover Downs International
Speedway is among one of those tracks, which are ‘tough as nails’, visited by
the Winston Cup Series.
HISTORY
OF DOVERS DOWN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
It is also known as ‘The Monster Mile’ by the drivers because of the
tremendous physical demands placed upon them. With a type of racing the
competition becomes intimate and very intense and no wonder people continue to
fill up the 140,000 seats surrounding the ‘The Monster Mile.’ Opened
in July, 1969, the Speedway hosted its first NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In 1971, the track was extended to 500 miles
for the Winston Cup. Bobby Allison emerged as the winner of first Dover
victory. Petty, a second 500-mile race winner was added to inaugural honors.
The events were shortened to 400 miles each in order to make the event more
competitive in the 1997 season. Petty and Bobby Allison are the 7 times
winners, while David Pearson won 6 times at the Dover Downs International
Speedway.
Featuring
NASCAR racing, Dover Downs is a 5/8-mile racing track with a gambling venue
called the Dover Slots. Dover Downs Entertainment also claims to have Toyota
Grand Prix of Long Beach, Memphis Motor sports Park, Nashville Speedway USA and
Gateway International.
Dover International
Speedway is sits on the outskirts of Delaware's capital city in the central
part of the state with a one-mile paved oval track. The same company that
operates Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, Nashville Speedway,
Memphis Motor sports Park and Nashville Super speedway possesses the Speedway.
TRACK INFORMATION
Dover International
Speedway is one of the few
tracks, where a minor mistake by one car can pull together a host of others,
causing so much damage to a chassis that many racers have been retired with an
accident. Its turns one and two are so sudden that the car fails to
"grip" the concrete and slide all over the place, but in turns three
and four you will manage to handle the car you. On turn three and four, after a
few laps, the car can be hold as fast as it'll go and just turn. Situated in
the heart of Dover, Delaware is a one-mile track paved track offering plenty of
fast, side-by-side racing. The two
Winston Cup
races
in 2003 will be very exciting as the solid concrete track surface creates a lot
of heat between the air temperature and the temperatures generated by the 3,400
pound stock cars and left no room for error for the 43 cars at the track. The
track of Dover Downs International Speedway is so solid that it makes the
atmosphere of the surrounding area very hot in early June. The Speedway is a
combination gritty horse racing track with the paved one, set within the
one-mile concrete track. This merger makes the combative element to the
facility of Dover Downs serving both NASCAR and horse racing fans. The track of
the Dover Downs is very exhausting and adds to the physical element of
navigating around.
